Traveling Zippers

Plus Size Leopard Pants, Nordstrom Plus Size
I traveled to GA to see my family for Thanksgiving.  Even at the airport, I try to look pulled together even though all I want to wear is an adult onese complete with footies and mittens. I picked up this look from Nordstrom.   When I'm traveling, I'm want to wear some sort of stretch jersey for comfort and minimal wrinkle effect.  I do like a quality heavy jersey.  The reason being is I don't want my pants to be transparent and I hate peeling (or sweater balls). When it comes to stretchy pants for plus size, Nordstrom has an awesome selection. I almost always get my leggings from there because of the quality. I paired with Vince Camuto top and a City Chic Jacket, two of my favorite brands that Nordstrom carries.

Style Notes: I like these leopard pants, because there is fold over flap with can dupe for a hi-waisted pants as well. I like this feature for traveling pants, because when I get up to move around the plane, there my pants are likely to stay up without any pulling or adjustment.  I got the pants in a 3X.  The Vince Camuto top has is silky on the front, but jersey on back for added ease and comfort.  You'll want to note that there is no stretch in the jacket.

#GarnerstyleBlkFri 2014: Plus Size Edition

Black Friday 2014, Plus Size Black Friday Deals

This is my favorite time of year.  I am able to help my readers take advantage of those awesome sales and get them the clothing they've been lusting after at a great price.  I always say that if you're on a budget and want fabulous clothing this is the time to shop.  Last year, I started by helping folks shop, pick sizes, and give them idea while shopping.  I plan to continue that this year.  Tag you questions #garnerstyleblkfri on Twitter and I'll help with any questions you may have.  I am @Garnerstyle on twitter.  To get you ready, here are some tips for shopping:

  • Shopping Apps:  Personally, I do my shopping online. I don't have time to fight anyone over anything, but for those of you who maybe in line and will still want to shop you favorite plus fashion stores you may want to download that store's app, if they have one.  Then you can pull double duty while you are waiting in those long lines.
  • The Early Bird Get The Worm: Some of these sales may only go to 10AM or 12AM, so keep that in mind.  For me, I usually do my shopping in the early A.M., so I am able to get the item that I want.
  • Remember There Is Cyber Monday:  I feel like Black Friday sales are the best, but Cyber Monday sales are right behind it in savings.  If you miss a brand on Black Friday, then more than likely there will be a good Cyber Monday sale right behind it.  I will have a list up on 12AM EST sharp on Monday for those looking for those.
  • Lean Towards Items That Would Normally Be Out of Budget: I definitely tend to gravitate towards things where the full price stings a little.  HA! If I can get that $150 top for $75 or that $300 dress for $150 then I'm jumping on it.
  • Familiarize Yourself With Return Policies Beforehand:  It can be easy to get caught up in, "I'm getting a deal" nostalgia, but don't forget to check out the return policies of the places you shop, so there are no surprises.

The Luxe UnLuxe Coat

Plus Size Olivia Pope Coat
Some of you may saw me feature the white version of this coat on Facebook/Instagram.  Out of the two, the black was my favorite, so I decided to photograph this color.  The title of this post is "The Luxe UnLuxe Coat," because this is one of those items that looks expensive, but totally isn't.  The quality is lovely and you can get a few different looks out of this jacket from wearing it differently.  Some of you asked me about the jacket from the Bows & Spirals post.    That jacket was sold out well before I wore it (it was also org. over $700, I got it for $75), but his is an awesome replacement with different colors, but a similar feel.   I don't usually point out a single piece like this, but I know you guys are always looking for the fabulous and budget friendly and this is definitely it.  This coat is totally Olivia Pope, but at a great price.

Style Notes:  I wanted to feature a few ways to style it in a more luxurious way.  I opted to drape over one of the collars and add a brooch to hold the collar in place. Brooches, to me, make looks feel a little more luxurious and are fun to look for in thrift/vintage shops. There is actually, a button there that you can drape the collar with, as well.  The buttons were big and brown and I thought they were distracting, so I removed them.  This jacket, from Forever21, does run small (like most of F21's clothing), so I sized up to a 3X.  I almost always buy their clothing in a 3X.  Returns can be a hassle through them, so I just size up so I don't have to worry about anything being too small.  Some of you asked about the arm size of this coat. My arms are on the larger side and the 3X seemed to accommodate my arm width comfortably.  I didn't have a lot of extra room, but the sizing works.  You'll want to note that the coat is lined throughout and in the arms, as well.  If you are looking for a little more room in the arm, you could cut a slit in the lining in the arm portion.  Lining will generally give you less room.  I see the black is sold out online, the white was sold out as well and they restocked, so they may do that with that black.  Otherwise, I would check in-store.

Tips for Dressing Well - Casual

People tell me all the time, "I like what you wear, but I just don't know how to put things together." I want to start a a series on tips for dressing well, where we can look at breaking down how to put together an everyday look.  For most of us, a lot of our looks can be casual because of function.  Dressing casual, for me, was like my last frontier to master. It's a hard one. It's so easy to look great dressed up, but dressing down can more of a challenge, because there is always a struggle on how casual to be.  I will say this, casual dressing, for me, takes just as much effort as dressing up.  It's a more comfortable look, but a lot of the elements are the same in terms of hair, make-up, and putting together a complete look.  Here's a few of things I do for putting together casual looks:
  1. Going casual doesn't mean I neglect hair and make-up.  Hair and make-up complete the look.  A bun is usually a go-to for me for a simple and quick hair-do that is always polished without question.  I wear a tinted moisturizer, mascara, and a lipstick most days.  It's a way for me not to commit fully to a full face, but still look put together.  I always feels like make-up is apart of completing the look.
  2. A great fitting denim can make all the difference.  I've recently found a new love for denim. For years I wouldn't wear jeans, because I could never find any that fit me well.  Times have changed and I actually have several pair that fit well and look good.  A good fitting jean is great for creating clean lines on your body and a great base for any look.  I love pencil pants as a substitution for jeans.  Finding  great denim is a very personal process and labor intensive. You need to try different brands until you find your best fit.  My personal favorites come from Torrid, Ashley Stewart, and Just My Size
  3. Add in comfy, but stylish shoes. People often say to me, "You always have the cutest flats." This is one of my favorite things to hear.  I don't wear the highest heels, but I'm always on the hunt for the cutest flat shoes.  I don't want my outfits to suffer, because I won't allow my feet to, so I take a lot of care in curating my flat shoe arsenal.  I tend to gravitate towards oxfords, patterned shoes (leopard, plaid, etc), and ballet flats.
  4. Pass the jacket, please.  I always feel like a blazer, moto jacket, and coat pulls everything together, brings polish, and completes the look.
  5. Fit is everything.  I say this a lot, but I can't stress it enough.  It's so important that your clothes fit you well.  You can get this through correct sizing and/or a tailor (or it's even better if you sew).  For me, I judge fit not only by looking, but by moving around.  Being a woman that is plus size, I do expect my clothes to shift somewhat just from moving around, but I don't expect to be pulling on them every 5 minutes.  Adjustments here and there are fine.  A lot of time, before I leave the house, if I find myself excessively adjusting my clothing then I won't wear.  I know the fit is off and I will replace it and note it in my head as something I need to have tailored.
  6. I don't believe in over-accessorizing.  This is a preference, but I subscribe the school of thought that less is more.  I like to choose a focal point of a look.  This look in particular is about this cozy sweater.  I generally wear the same studs (I got married in them and consider them lucky), my marriage rings, an additional accessory, and a bag.
I hope this helps put some method to my own process. Feel free to ask any questions below and please let me know if this is something that you would like to see more often.

Capers

Plus Size Caper Dress, Nordstrom Plus Size Dress

If you follow me on my social channels, then y'all know I kind of live in Nordstrom.  They are one of the few stores in my area that has in-store plus sizes and there is literally always something fabulous to buy. My favorite sections are the plus, of course, the jewelry, and the make-up.  I've started my shopping for holiday looks and I was so excited to come across this Adrianna Pappell dress via Nordstrom. I purchased it without hesitation. I've been waiting sooooo long to buy something with the cape effect.  It's exciting that something relatively new to the runways is being offered in plus sizes, and Nordstrom has it. I remember a time where we wouldn't get the latest styles until 2 or 3 years later.  I commend Nordy on offering us these fashion forward looks.  Just know this cape is everything!  I kept hitting my husband with it.  I just needed him to understand that I had a cape on and I do know how to use it, but really who would be able to keep from swinging this.  While out in it, I got asked over and over where it came from.

Style Notes:  This cape dress is in a size 22. It does have stretch.  I like the fact that the cape comes past the dress for extra coverage in the back area.  Overall, it's very comfortable.  If it were colder, I would definitely pair it with some long gloves. This also makes for an excellent little black dress.  I really could see my mom in this, so I'm thinking this could possibly be her Christmas gift (hopefully she isn't nosily reading this post).  I'll just tell her we can't wear it at the same time. HA!  Also, some of you asked about my hair and how I've been achieving my waves.  I've been using the clipless curling iron.  Find it here. I'm definitely not a hair guru, but this makes it super easy.  Just add a little hair spray and you are good to go for the day.  It generally only takes me about 15 minutes to put these waves in already straightened hair.

The Holiday Party Post

Plus Size Holiday Dress, Torrid Holiday

It's November, so I'm excited about the holiday pieces that come out during this time. Torrid also has some great gifts listed in their holiday catalog including a new fragrance coming out on 11/17. It smells lovely, like a light powdery/floral scent.  I am also super excited to shop for holiday clothes, I tend to gravitate towards colors: red, cream, and gold.  Anything sparkly or with sequins are a must as well. Torrid just released pieces from their holiday look-book. I actually got my mailer (with coupons) on Saturday and partnered with Torrid to style a few looks from the look-book.   This isn't my usual one piece three ways, but I did use the cropped convertible jacket in two looks.  It's my favorite piece from the collection.  The jacket can be worn as a blazer, then you can zip off the bottom and wear it as a cropped jacket.  Genius!! I love that I'm starting to see convertible pieces in plus.  It allows you to get more bang for your buck.  Now, let's get into these looks.

Before 5pm office party:  I really loved this look.  My thought was that this would be a great look for those holiday parties in the office that begin before 5pm.  So you still have to work (and I use that term loosely, lol) for the first half of the day, then the rest of the day you are partying.  This is a way for you to look festive and office appropriate, and to be comfortable.  I know I blog full time, but I do remember what it was like to work a 9-5. Style Notes: I love love love these pants. They are high-waisted and give your body nice lines.  They have stretch and I got them in a Torrid size 4.  The shell I'm wearing is tucked in, but is long and flowy and can be worn untucked. I got the shell in a 3 to cover the hips.  I got the cropped jacket in a 3.  This is pretty true to size, so I should have gotten a 2.  The jacket is made from a ponte knit material and does contain stretch.

After 5pm office party:  I put together this look for those of you that have the after 5pm holiday parties.  I love fall because I wear tights, and wear dresses that are a little shorter, but still have that coverage on my legs.  I love wearing red and this color is often hard to find unless it's around the holidays, so I'm always sure to grab some sort of red dress during this time. I paired with the cream convertible jacket for the arm coverage you may want, especially when you are with the office folk.  Style Notes:  I got this dress in a 22 and it fits like a cover.  It does have stretch.

Holiday Weekend Break: You've been fancy this week and will definitely want to slip into something comfortable.  I chose these leopard pants with the relaxed fit and paired with the "lips" sweater.  Style Notes:  The lips sweater is a size 3.  I sized up for an oversized look.  I would normally do a 2.  The pants are a size 5.  I do have some of these pants in a 4, but there is no stretch and I sized up for extra legroom.  There is a drawstring to tighten the waist a little if you need it.
