Hey Garnerstyle: Work Wear Chic

Work wardrobes can be tricky.  You don't want to be stuffy, but you still want to be professional.  You want to keep it fun, but you want to be taken seriously.  The wardrobe you wear to work can send so many messages.  I think young professionals struggle the most with wanting to bring their own identity to the workplace, but remain appropriate at the same time.  When looking to revamp your wardrobe you want to take into account the following:

Your workplace environment:  A.M. is a creative director, so I assume that she gets a "funky" card.  Meaning that some things may be more appropriate for her office as opposed to a more traditional office, such as an attorney's place of business.  It's probably okay for her to add in bright colors, open toe shoes, funky jewelry, etc.  A lawyers office maybe more stringent on the dress code where suits are required, no sleeveless tops, and loud clothing may be frowned upon.
The position you hold:  I come from the school of thought where I will dress for the job I want instead of the job I hold, but for some this may not be realistic point of view.  Think about the functions of your wardrobe.  A.M. states that she "runs around."  This indicates that she needs shoes that are professional and comfortable.  I would suggest wedges, flats and kitten heels.  She may not want to have clothes that are restricting just so she can move around easily.  Flare skirts for easy walking, blazers and pencil skirts with a little bit of stretch for easy arm and leg movement.
Your budget:  It's good to know you budget upfront, so you can devise a plan of how to shop.  Think about investing in your staples (pencil skirts, black pants, etc).  You are going to wear them often.  Don't count out thrift stores, which are a great place to find blazers.

So how do you still keep it professional, but fun?  It's all in the accessories.  They can really speak volumes about your personality.  Jewelry, handbags, and shoes should always reflect your personality.   Wardrobes are based upon staple items, but you accessories is really where you can put in your own flare.  Also, pay attention to the details in the items you choose.  Below these items have ruffles, studs, etc.  It's small details like these that will reflect who you are and the things that you like.

Also, A.M. just got a new promotion, but that doesn't mean she has to toss her old clothes.  She can work within the items that she already owns to make new looks.  She said that she wears blazers and nice shirts.  Well she can easily pair those with slacks, a pencil skirt, or a flare skirt to give herself a more professional and polished look.

Items not appropriate for most work environment:  Super high platform shoes (these are for the nightlife), sheer tops without a camisole underneath, mini skirts, shorts, capris (those always keep an office debate going), and flip flops.  I may have missed a few things, but you catch my drift.

Other tidbits:  Fashionable shoes that don't hold a 4 inch heel are hard to find, so you have to be on the constant lookout.  I don't own a lot of shoes, but I'm constantly searching the internet for anything that is stellar in a low heel.  Some fierce low heels can be found at Zara, but beware their shoes are made for the narrow foot.  Also, search through sites by heel height.  It will allow you to search entire sites quicker.  If you have a tight budget, don't fret.  Stay on top of your sales and clearance sections.  I would check once a week.  I'm all about getting a $150 skirt for $50.  It will mean that I am getting the quality without the price tag.  Don't expect to build an entire wardrobe in a week.  This is how you end up with crap you will never wear.  Instead really ask yourself, " Do I love this?"  If you don't love it, leave it.  Gage you body type when getting ready for work.  You know where your lady lumps lie.  I know my booty is big.  I wouldn't wear tight pencil skirts to work and most of the time I would always pair with a cardigan or blazer.  To my busty girls, if you look like you could feed a small village when you look in the mirror, you probably shouldn't wear it to work.  (To some this may be obvious, but I've seen it all.)

PennyChic for Plus Sizes

PennyChic for Walmart
I love blogger/brand collaborations and supporting them, especially when they are fabulous like this one.  Penny Chic, whom I recently discovered, partnered with Wal-Mart to bring you fashion on a dime.   What a more fabulous choice to recreate the Little Black Dress, a staple that should be in everyone's closet.  At only $20 per dress, this is both chic and affordable.  This is Penny Chic's whole mantra, stylish and affordable.  I love it!  She knows her stuff too, her videos on her under $10 finds are insane! (That's Penny below - how cute is she?!).

On with the challenge.  I splurged and bought all 5.  I wanted to see how wearable each one of these dresses were for plus sizes.   I love the fact that Penny didn't forget about us.  She totally offers these dresses up to a 4X. For me, the dress that I would definitely wear is "the curvy."  It's flattering and the dress is long enough.  Yall know I love a long (below the knee) hemline.  "The Curvy" was the only one that provided that.  These dresses are definitely for the girls that don't mind showing a little leg.  My suggestion is that if you want a little more length go up a size.

Note:  I bought all the dress in a 3X.  "The Utility" fabric was a little different and I felt ran small.  Size up on this one.  For those wondering my height, I'm 5'9.   All are fab, but my top two in design are the skater and the peplum.   My one critique is that I wish they had been longer.

7 Minute Make-Up

Believe it or not, I do my daytime make-up in 7 minutes or less.  From a previous post, one of Pricilla Ono's rules was giving yourself enough time to get ready in the morning.  I know our lives are often hectic and sleep is precious, but this is definitely a rule I always follow.  I'm also realistic, as a I am probably the presiding chairman of the sleep lovers anonymous club. I know that spending two or more hours getting ready is not feasible for most.  Personally, I have my routine down to 1 hour of getting ready time.  I can shower, get dressed and put on my make-up in an hours time.  In the video below, I show you how I do my make up routine in under 7 minutes.  I will also include some tips on I get ready in an hour's time.

Tips for a polished, but quick execution
Have your items out and ready to go - Most of the time we use the same make-up. Lay those items out, so you don't have to go digging for them and wasting time looking for this or that.

Prep your face in the shower - You're killing two birds with one stone.  Just make sure you stick your face wash/exfoliant  in the shower with you, so that you can include you skin care.  Your pores will already be open from the steam and it will mean you won't have to wait for the water out of your sink to warm up.

If possible lay your clothes out the night before - As with any lifestyle change this is that extra effort to help you be successful.

If you can't lay your clothes out, mentally prepare you outfits in your head.   The mornings that I would be late would be when I didn't prepare my outfits in my head the night before.  I learned that if I'm too tired to prep my clothes at night that I should put an outfit together in my head, so I won't take up time trying to find something to wear and my bathroom won't be a wreck.

Play upbeat music - I don't know about you guys, but a quick upbeat jam puts a pep in my step and helps me move quickly.  Remember that you are supposed to get ready and not dancing.

Easy Breezy Beautiful Bad...

Kid Fury Tee, JIBRI High Waist Skirt, Plus Size clothing
So I guess you would call me a reformed internet lurker.  I'm usually a person who looks at all kind of blogs & vlogs and rarely comments.  I enjoy what others do, but was terrible at subscribing and commenting.  Which is weird because I'm a blogger and I know for those of us who "work" online, interaction means growth for our blogs.  (Shame on me!)  Every so often I get mail from a "lurker" usually entailing a question and an apology for being a lurker.  What they don't know is that I totally understand! I'm doing better though, I'm subscribing and commenting.  I would probably have to thank one of my favorite people to watch on youtube, Kid Fury.  OMG! He's got so much inappropriate hilariousness running rampant on his channel.  I love it.  I even got my husband watching.  He was trying to act like he wasn't funny.  He eventually fell in line though now he does the computer hover over my shoulder (I hate that! LOL).  Anyways, one of my favorite sayings of his is, "Easy Breezy Beautiful Bad Bitch."  So much that I had to get the t-shirt.   The funny thing about this t-shirt is that the "grand people" (my nephew's cute name for old people & my parents) love it.  I mean like 70/80 year old men come up to me and say, I love your t-shirt.  How cool is that?!?

Note:  I ordered my t-shirt in a large.  You can purchase on the Kid Fury Website.  Unfortunately, the shop is under construction.  Hopefully it will be back soon.

The Plus Size Wedding Dress Hunt

Shopping for a bridal gown is one of those experiences that you should be able to do in person.  Many stores can order a gown up to a size 28, but when it comes to carrying the samples in plus sizes they usually fall short.  This can leave a bride very frustrated.  I have to admit that I was irritated with this. When I went dress shopping, I was unable to try on the dress.  I think the sample size they had was a size 8. The bride consultant attached some huge piece of elastic that held the dress up to my body.  In retrospect that experience actually made me sad while mixing a little bit of humiliation in there.  It was probably one of the few times in my adult life that I was made to feel left out, in terms of the experience.  My dress was beautiful and I think I made the perfect choice, but because I am a stylist and I have the gift of visualization it came out wonderful.  But I would have still deserved to have dozens of gowns to try on.

As spring is approaching, questions are coming in about bridal gowns.  I am even working with a bride on helping her to find the perfect dress.  This post I wanted to share some of the things I did and what I learned from wedding dress shopping.  I also want to highlight some bridal shops that cater to plus size women.  Yes, they exist.

Tips for shopping plus size bridal
Figure out up front how important the dress is to you.  To some brides the dress is not important.  If it's not, find a site online, order cheaply, and have it altered.  Slap your hands together and move on to your other plans.  If it is super important, like mine was to me, then you will need a plan of action if you plan on buying you dress somewhere else besides David's Bridal.  If you want the whole bridal experience (trying on the dress, family friends, etc), you may need to travel to find the perfect dress.  Do you research to see if there are any plus size bridal boutiques close to you.  I am providing some, but I'm sure there are some that I will miss.  Get your Google on and don't be afraid to go past the 1st page.  Figure out who's got plus size sample sizes.  There is nothing more disappointing than going to try on dresses and they have nothing for you.  Call ahead and make sure there are ample dresses for you to try on.

Don't let your weight loss plans interfere with ordering your dress.   A lot of brides (I didn't LOL) plan to diet for their big day and can put off ordering a dress because of anticipating being smaller.  I can only detect an issue if you are going from a size 28 to a size 0.  Plus sizes tend to take longer to drop sizes as opposed to straight size.  A straight size girl may only need to drop 10 pounds to drop a size, it takes me about 30 pounds.  I've dropped 70 pounds before and only went down 3-4 sizes.  That's would still be fine for alteration.  This leads me to my next tip.

It is always better to order too big than too small.  Don't order for an anticipated size.  Order the size that you are today.  If you can get smaller going smaller is an easier and less expensive alteration.  Taking the dress out can cost more and could still end up in an ill-fitting dress.  I've actually seen someone make this mistake.  They ordered their "wish size,"  ended up gaining weight and on their wedding day... Let's just say I felt so bad for her. Nobody wants to have the memory (and photos) of their dress fitting too small.

You need to order your dress about 10 - 12 months in advance.  This allows time for the be made and shipped.  Take into account that you may have an international designer ,as I did. I ordered 9 months before my big day and my dress had it's final alteration 2 weeks before my wedding.  That was cutting it close.

Don't settle.  I can't think of one day in a women's life where she deserves to get what she wants.  This will probably be the most expensive dress you will ever buy.  Don't just take something, because you don't think you'll find anything else.

Breathe.  This is easy to say after the fact, but I was so worried about not finding the "perfect" dress.  It's true what they say, you will know when it is the dress.

Bring your shapewear.  You want to be able to see how you would look on the big day.  Bring you strapless bra, long line bra, and girdle.  Have them on and ready to go, so you get the full effect.

Arm people be prepared.  Some of you ladies will not be wanting to show your arms on your wedding day.  That's fine, but the selection of plus size bridal gowns with sleeves is slim.  There are some, but there will be only be a few to choose from.   You may do better online than in the store.  You could opt for an add-on jacket or have sleeves built onto the dress.  Yes they can do that, but it will cost you.

Labworks for Target

Labworks for Target
Labworks for Target is carrying a magnificent capsule collection for both straight and plus sizes.  (A capsule collection is a collection that has around eight work wear pieces that can be swapped in and out easily to make multiple outfits.)  The great thing about this collection is that is super cute and affordable.  Nothing over $60.  They've got some great staple pieces.   I bought seven pieces with the intent of keep only a few things.  Everything I tried out was really nice.  Most of the items were made out of a soft, but heavy ponte knit.  The Labworks Collection also some flirty summer pieces in there as well.  Labworks is not at the Target locations, it is available online only.

Note:  The white sleeveless peplum top was bought from the straight size collection in a large.  I got it in that size because that was the largest size that wasn't sold out.  It's a fab top that has unfortunately sold out.  I'm not sure if Target will restock.  Also, some of you ladies were asking about my bra.  I become in love with long line bras all over again.  I'm not sure if you remember when Lane Bryant had 5-way long line bras.  It was years ago.  They discontinued them.  Well I found someone selling them (brand new & unworn) on Ebay.  You can find a few here.  I also just put in the Ebay search, "Cacique Long Line Bras."  I love the long line bras because it conceals the "back bubbles" and the band gives you that lift that is hard to find with a strapless bra.  I see that Lane Bryant has brought back some fancy long line bras, I'm hoping they bring back the 5-way ones they had.  I need one in black.

Started from the Bottom...

Pricilla Ono for Slink Magazine
I meant to post this last week.  Excuse my slowness. Can I say that I am just blown away by this editorial!  When I think about plus size high fashion, where it's going, and how it should look, this is the perfect example of how things can be.   I'm elated to the progress.  Plus size fashion is still a baby as compared to main stream fashion.  10 years ago this wouldn't even be considered, but look at us now.  Kudos to the team at Slink Magazine.  I've known about Slink, but this just slapped my neo cortex in the face.  So much so that I had to buy the physical copy.  You can order a copy for yourself here.

From "The Health Issue," the editorial is called, "The Placebo Effect." The article is accompanied with an interview of Ono.  Besides being freaking fabulous, she exudes confidence.  (Always the best thing you can wear).  My favorite question from the interview  is below, partly because I live my life by these very same rules.

SLiNK is all about body confidence and loving the body you’re in. Can you give our readers your top confidence boosting tips?

1) Always Dress your best
2) Give yourself time to get ready in the morning
3) Make sure you look in the mirror and point put all your best features, Like “Hips” “Lips” “eyes” “skin” , etc., And accentuate that!

You can read the remaining article at Slink Magazine.  I picked up both the digital copy and the physical one.  The digital is instant.

Fun Fact:  Model Pricilla Ono is Rihanna's Make-Up artist.

Gel Nail Kit

Sensationail Gel Nail Kit Review

I love looking at nail design and gel nail colors on my daily feed on Pinterest.  I recently went home to Brunswick, GA and my mom gifted me the Sensational Starter Gel Polish Kit from Walgreens (cost $59.99).  I had been coveting this set. I wanted to have the kit to put a gel overlay on any nail designs that I may get, so that they can last longer. Also, getting to the nail salon can sometimes be an inconvenience and this can get me through any off days. I had two chipped nails and wanted to re-do those nails.  Once I started found out, I found out the color wasn't the same as my original gel manicure.  The different gel shades actually look neat on  my fingers.

Sensational Gel Nail Kit Review

Sensationail Gel Nail Kit Review

Tips from my Instagram lovelies:

Do light coats - I learned this the hard way, my thumb looks a mess.  If you do too much it will be too thick.
Cure your thumbs by themselves - The LED is only big enough for four fingers.
Have a friend help -  I'm not a good polisher with my left hand.  How you polish will reflect in your finished product.   Having someone help you will ensure you a better overall look.  The above hand I did was polished with my left hand.  :(
Colors are cheapest at Walgreens - I looked around online and found that the additional colors were cheaper at Walgreens for $11.99 per color.  You will get a $1 off coupon with your kit.   My mom actually works at a Walgreens and told me to look out for the Buy 1 get one 50% off sale.

Pros
It works.  At the end you just wipe off and you are completely dry
Inexpensive compared those pricey gel manicures you get every couple weeks.
A nice selection of colors in the store.
Uses LED light instead of the UV light.  UV is just like the light they use in tanning bed and is said to pose a  health risk.  As of now, no risks are associated the LED light.

Cons
Kit only gives you sample size gel & polish - Good for only 10 manicures. You will have to buy extra.
That LED burned a little.  It caught me off guard, not bad, but it was noticeable.
The lamp is small -- not big enough for you whole hand.
If you're not ambidextrous, then you probably will need help with the 2nd hand.

Overall, I really this this and would recommend it if you are looking for purchase a kit for yourself.   If you have any additional tips feel free to comment them below.  I'm sure you fashion sisters would appreciate it (me included).

Celebrity Style Capture: Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian Style, Kim Kardashian Fat Girl Look
I've been wanting a varsity jacket for sometime now.  I'm a huge fan of Pharrell and he always looks so cute in his.  I didn't want to invest a whole lot into the trend, so when Wet Seal wanted to partner with me on a post I was delighted.  I scanned their clothing and came across this adorable jacket. Celebrities wear these jackets all the time in a more casual manner, but I wanted to give mine a sophisticated look.  I think Kim Kardashian did it perfectly.  Trendy, but polished at the same time.

Note:  I tried on two different sizes of this jacket.  I initially got a 3x because it is a Jr Plus line.  Jr. Plus run smaller.  The 3x was too big for the look I was going for.  I wanted the more cropped/smaller fit, so I traded out for a 1x.  I think I should have gotten the XL in the regular sizes to get closer the cropped fit I was looking for.  I would say these jackets run large.
